At the closing of the Szigeti Tóth János Memorial Conference held on 6 November 2025, the organizers announced that, based on the proposal of the Hungarian Folk High School Society, from 2026 onwards, 24 January will be the International Day of Adult Educators.

Why 24 January?

International Education Day, supported by UNESCO, is celebrated on 24 January, a date designated by the UN General Assembly in 2018.

The Hungarian Folk High School Society proposed that, in order to increase the recognition of the adult education profession, strengthen cooperation, and enhance the broad social recognition of adult learning, adult educators should be celebrated on this day each year. The proposal was accepted by the European Association for the Education of Adults (EAEA), so under the name International Day of Adult Educators we join UNESCO’s 24 January event — at the European level.

The work of adult educators is exceptionally important in all societies: they help people gain new chances for learning, advancement, and self-realization. They provide opportunities for people to develop, change, and start anew. Through their work, they not only convey knowledge, but also create opportunities.

The organization of the celebration has begun, and as a first step we are publishing our call to join the one-day national program series planned for 2026, for which only a data sheet needs to be completed.
